Ruby & Sapphire

Series: EX

Release date: July 1, 2003

Cards: 109

Set code: EX1

Nintendo distributed this expansion itself, the first it handled after four years under Wizards of the Coast, and it opens the EX Series with Generation III. Pokémon-ex start here: eight of them run from 96 to 103, ahead of the basic Energy cards that close the list, each with a holofoil border and the standing cost of a second Prize card for the opponent when one is knocked out. The frame changed with them, the gold around the illustration window and the evolution box turning silver, and the evolution stage and illustrator credit moving below the picture. The dot code strip from the e-Card sets survived along the bottom edge, but an e-Reader now returned nothing more than the Pokédex entry. Several rules were rewritten on release, among them the limit of one retreat per turn that the game still keeps. Japan had the set in January 2003 as the Expansion Pack that opens its ADV era, with three half decks beside it, and the English printing followed in June. Ruby & Sapphire (EX1) was released on July 1, 2003 in the EX series, with 109 cards. Its most expensive card is Mewtwo ex #101 (Rare Holo ex), at $269.72 (median of 19 sales over 30 days, October 1, 2026).
