Base Expansion Pack

Series: E-series

Release date: December 1, 2001

Cards: 128

Set code: BEX

Japan's e-Card era opens with this pack, which went on sale on December 1, 2001, the same day Nintendo released the Card e Reader. The card face was rebuilt for that device, the left and bottom borders widened to carry a dot code the reader turns into Pokédex text, a short film or a minigame. Pokémon Card★web had already split Pokémon Power into Poké-POWER, which you activate, and Poké-BODY, which is simply always on, and Technical Machine cards, the Trainers that lend an attack, had arrived with Pokémon Card★VS; the e-Card face carries both over. The 128 cards hold only 96 paintings, because the thirty two holos at 097 to 128 repeat the thirty two rares at 065 to 096 in the same order. Charizard therefore exists twice over, plain at 071 and foiled at 103, both signed Hiromichi Sugiyama, and Mewtwo, Blastoise and Tyranitar do the same under Kimiya Masago. Base Expansion Pack (BEX) was released on December 1, 2001 in the E-series, with 128 cards. Its most expensive card is Mew (1st Edition) #119 (Rare Holo), at $569.39 (median of 11 sales over 90 days, September 30, 2026).
