Sword & Shield

Series: Sword & Shield

Release date: February 7, 2020

Cards: 202 (14 secret)

Set code: SWSH01

The Pokémon V and the Pokémon VMAX both reach an expansion here, a month after a Meowth pair had introduced them in a collector's box, the first a Basic with unusually high HP that gives up two Prize cards when it is knocked out, the second an evolution from a V of the same name that gives up three. A VMAX can only be built on its matching V and never on the ordinary Pokémon, and it counts as an evolution card for every other purpose. The Fairy type was retired with this set, its Pokémon folded back into Psychic, while Poison Pokémon moved from Psychic to Darkness. The player going first also lost the right to play a Supporter card on that turn. The frame gained a quiet marker at the same time, one arch between the name and the HP for a Stage 1 and two for a Stage 2, with the copyright line pushed down onto the bottom border. Japan issued it in December 2019 as the paired Sword and Shield sets, and the English expansion followed in February with Zacian and Zamazenta fronting its two Elite Trainer Boxes. Sword & Shield (SWSH01) was released on February 7, 2020 in the Sword & Shield series, with 202 cards plus 14 secret rares. Its most expensive card is Snorlax VMAX #206 (Secret Rare), at $67.28 (median of 16 sales over 30 days, October 1, 2026). A sealed booster box sells for $420.24 (median of 5 sales over 30 days, September 25, 2026).

What is the letter D printed beside the set symbol on Sword & Shield cards?

It is the regulation mark, and Sword & Shield is the first English expansion to carry one. The letter D was chosen to line up with the Asian releases, which had used the system since the Sun & Moon Era, and tournament formats now read that mark rather than the expansion a card came from to decide whether it is still legal. Basic Energy cards bear no mark at all.
