Expedition Base Set

Series: E-Card

Release date: September 15, 2002

Cards: 165

Set code: ECARD1

The e-Card era opens with this set, and every card carries a strip of dot code printed down its left and bottom edges. Swiped through a Nintendo e-Reader plugged into a Game Boy Advance, that strip gave up Pokédex text, a short game, a piece of music, or on some cards a hidden attack that tournament play never accepted. Pokémon Power splits in two here: a Poké-POWER has to be activated, a Poké-BODY works on its own unless something shuts it off. Technical Machine cards arrive at the same time, Trainer cards that attach to a Pokémon and lend it an attack, named after the item in the video games. Wizards cut the booster from eleven cards to nine and printed no 1st Edition run, the first time it had skipped one on a set that was not a reprint. The first thirty-two numbers are all holofoil, and each of those cards is printed again without foil further down the list, which is why the same Pokémon turns up twice in the numbering. Expedition Base Set (ECARD1) was released on September 15, 2002 in the E-Card series, with 165 cards. Its most expensive card is Mew #19 (Rare Holo), at $704.79 (median of 7 sales over 30 days, October 2, 2026).
