Team Rocket

Series: Base

Release date: April 24, 2000

Cards: 82 (1 secret)

Set code: BASE5

Dark Pokémon arrive with this expansion, framed in brown and black instead of gold and given more damage with less HP than the ordinary versions, the story being that Team Rocket raised them badly. Because the word Dark belongs to the card name, a deck may hold four Dark Charizard and four plain Charizard at once. Holofoil Trainer and Energy cards appear for the first time at numbers fifteen, sixteen and seventeen, Here Comes Team Rocket!, Rocket's Sneak Attack and Rainbow Energy, which starts its long run in the game here. Full Heal Energy and Potion Energy close the numbered list and were the first Special Energy cards to do something besides provide Energy. Devastation and Trouble were the theme decks, and this was the first English expansion whose boosters shipped without a cardboard backed blister, the Italian release aside. Arita took the Dark Blastoise, Dark Machamp and Dark Dragonite, Ken Sugimori the Dark Charizard and Dark Alakazam, Kagemaru Himeno the Dark Gyarados. Team Rocket (BASE5) was released on April 24, 2000 in the Base series, with 82 cards plus 1 secret rares. Its most expensive card is Dark Charizard #4 (Rare Holo), at $168.00 (median of 13 sales over 7 days, September 30, 2026).

What went wrong with the copyright line on Team Rocket's Dark Arbok?

Both Dark Arbok cards in Team Rocket, the holofoil numbered 2 and the non holofoil numbered 19, were printed with a stray 3 inside the copyright line, so it reads 23000 instead of 2000. The mistake was never corrected inside the set: only the stamped promo copy given away at the Hong Kong Pokémon League in February 2001 carries the right date.
