Fossil

Series: Base

Release date: October 10, 1999

Cards: 62

Set code: BASE3

A Trainer card you put into play as though it were a Basic Pokémon turns up for the first time here: Mysterious Fossil has no attacks, cannot retreat, and hands the opponent no Prize card when it is knocked out. The Fossil Trainer cards that followed mostly work on the pattern it set, Claw Fossil and Root Fossil included. This was also the last expansion made with the Starlight foil, the game moving to the Cosmos pattern with Base Set 2 a few months later. The prerelease Aerodactyl exists in a gold and a brown version, and a run of cards bearing a 1999 to 2000 copyright line came out of the Thunderstorm gift box and, later, out of the Australian red logo Unlimited packs. Arita signed the three legendary birds, Kagemaru Himeno the Aerodactyl and Dragonite, and Keiji Kinebuchi the Gengar and Ditto that collectors ask for most. Japan had it in June 1997 as Mystery of the Fossils, at forty eight cards against sixty two in English. Fossil (BASE3) was released on October 10, 1999 in the Base series, with 62 cards. Its most expensive card is Dragonite #4 (Rare Holo), at $89.64 (median of 8 sales over 7 days, September 30, 2026). A sealed booster box sells for $17,575.78 (median of 5 sales over 30 days, August 3, 2026).
