Neo Genesis

Series: Neo

Release date: December 16, 2000

Cards: 111

Set code: NEO1

Generation II reaches the expansions with this set, the first of the Neo Series; the very first Generation II card had been a Togepi promo slipped into Japanese CoroCoro in May 1999. Darkness and Metal join the Energy types here, and both are still in use. Baby Pokémon appear at the same time, as do Pokémon Tools, Trainer cards that stay attached to a Pokémon in play the way a held item works in Gold and Silver. The frame was redrawn as well: the evolution box became a circle, the HP turned from red to black, and the evolution stage moved underneath it. Each of the three Johto starters got two holofoil cards, so Meganium, Feraligatr and Typhlosion all appear twice in the numbering with different art and different attacks. Wizards was still printing a 1st Edition run at this point, a practice it abandoned once Neo Destiny closed the series in 2002. Neo Genesis (NEO1) was released on December 16, 2000 in the Neo series, with 111 cards. Its most expensive card is Lugia #9 (Rare Holo), at $353.04 (median of 14 sales over 30 days, October 2, 2026).

Which Neo Genesis card was redrawn for release outside Japan?

Moo-Moo Milk (101/111). Tomokazu Komiya's Japanese illustration showed a Sentret suckling at a cow like udder, judged unsuitable for the audience outside Japan, so the same artist redrew it as cans of milk in a barn with a Cleffa. Japanese printings from Pokemon VS onward then used the redrawn picture as well.
