Gym Heroes

Series: Gym

Release date: August 14, 2000

Cards: 132

Set code: GYM1

Kanto's Gym Leaders take over the card names in this expansion: Misty's Staryu and Brock's Onix are separate cards from the plain versions, so a deck can hold four of each. Every Owner's Pokémon carries a small portrait of its trainer in the bottom right corner, backed by that leader's Badge, and the Pokédex entry was dropped to make room. Stadium cards also start here, Trainer cards that stay on the table and bend the rules for both players, among them Pewter City Gym, Cerulean City Gym, Vermilion City Gym and Celadon City Gym. Wizards assembled the English set from two Japanese releases at once, Leaders' Stadium and Challenge from the Darkness. The four theme decks are named after leaders rather than mechanics, and those same four, Brock, Misty, Lt. Surge and Erika, are the only ones with a holofoil Trainer card of their own here. Sabrina and Blaine have Pokémon in the set but wait for Gym Challenge in October to get theirs. Gym Heroes (GYM1) was released on August 14, 2000 in the Gym series, with 132 cards. Its most expensive card is Sabrina's Gengar #14 (Rare Holo), at $373.12 (median of 5 sales over 7 days, October 3, 2026). A sealed booster box sells for $29,609.91 (median of 3 sales over 90 days, August 30, 2026).

The length of a Pokemon. You put a Basic Pokemon or Evolution card face down, name it, and your opponent guesses how long that Pokemon is: a correct guess draws them two cards, a wrong one draws you two. The card is 97/132, and it grew awkward to play once the length line disappeared from card faces with the Expedition Base Set.
