Gym Challenge

Series: Gym

Release date: October 16, 2000

Cards: 132

Set code: GYM2

Blaine, Koga, Sabrina and Giovanni front the second and final Gym set, replacing the Brock, Misty, Lt. Surge and Erika decks that Gym Heroes had put out two months earlier. Wizards of the Coast built both English Gym sets by mixing the two Japanese expansions, so Brock's and Misty's Pokémon still turn up here even though their theme decks do not. Two illustrations were redrawn before the English printing: Koga's Ninja Trick lost an omote manji, the Buddhist symbol that mirrors the Nazi swastika, and Misty's Tears swapped a nude drawing of Misty for a Squirtle catching the tears. Blaine's Charizard left the factory with a Fighting symbol in the cost of Roaring Flames, and the fix landed so late in the unlimited run that corrected copies are the harder ones to find. Ken Sugimori signed 100 of the 132 cards, Shin-ichi Yoshida contributing only Rocket's Mewtwo and Rocket's Zapdos. This is also the last English expansion of new first generation cards, since Neo Genesis brought Johto in December of the same year; only Legendary Collection, an all-reprint set, went back to Kanto alone in 2002. Gym Challenge (GYM2) was released on October 16, 2000 in the Gym series, with 132 cards. Its most expensive card is Blaine's Charizard #2 (Rare Holo), at $391.71 (median of 17 sales over 30 days, October 3, 2026). A sealed booster box sells for $20,354.15 (median of 3 sales over 90 days, June 20, 2026).
