Are McDonald's Pokémon Cards Real? What They're Worth and How to Tell

NeverLeaveMe·

Yes. McDonald's Pokémon cards are official Pokémon Trading Card Game cards, given away with Happy Meals (Happy Sets in Japan) since January 2002 in Japan and June 2011 in North America. They are real cards, not toys or proxies: the Western ones reprint existing cards with McDonald's numbering, and the Japanese ones are numbered promos.

Most are worth a few dollars. As of September 24, 2026, the Western cards of 2011 to 2021 mostly sell for $2 to $12 raw, with the Europe-only 2016 set higher at $19 to $63, and the Pokémon of Japan's 2002 Minimum Pack sell for $20 to $1,566; the 2025 Japanese burger Pikachu sells for $23.12 (20 sales). Fakes exist but are uncommon; the checks below are how to tell.

How to check a McDonald's card, step by step

Find the number. A Western McDonald's card is numbered within its McDonald's set, out of 12 from 2011 to 2019 (40 in France in 2018 and 2019), 25 in 2021 and 15 from 2022 to 2024, never with the number of the card it reprints. It carries a McDonald's set symbol, or the code M23 or M24 on the 2023 and 2024 cards, and no rarity symbol where a standard card shows one (our rarity guide explains those symbols). Japanese McDonald's cards carry a promo number, such as 025/P or 020/M-P (the 2002 Minimum Pack is numbered out of 018), and a McDonald's M logo.

Check the finish against the year. The English sets of 2011 to 2019 were all holo: one card came with each Happy Meal, and every card had the dotted Confetti foil, so a non-holo English McDonald's card from those years is a red flag. Since 2021, each four-card pack has held one Confetti holo and three non-holo cards, so a non-holo card is normal; in Dragon Discovery (2024 and 2025), the seven Scarlet & Violet reprints are the holos and the eight Sword & Shield reprints are non-holo. Confetti is the McDonald's signature but not exclusive to it: the Classic Collection of Celebrations (2021) uses it too.

Compare it with a genuine card. McDonald's cards are printed like any other card, so the general rule applies: no single test proves a card genuine or fake, each check compares your card with a genuine copy of the same card, and a verdict needs several to agree. Our guide to spotting fake Pokémon cards runs through the checks, from the back to the light test.

Take care with the 2025 Japanese Pikachu. It gets copied: in 2025, PSA received 51 counterfeit copies of it while grading more than 285,000 genuine ones. A genuine Pikachu 020/M-P shows Pikachu at a table reaching for a burger, the McDonald's M logo at the right edge of the art, 70 HP, the illustrator Yuu Nishida, and the regulation mark H beside a PROMO box and the number.

Distrust a "2026" McDonald's card. As of September 24, 2026, no McDonald's Pokémon card giveaway has run in 2026 in Japan or the United States, so a card sold as a 2026 McDonald's Pokémon card from either market comes from another year, or is a fake.

Japan and the West ran separate programs: the Japanese cards are promos with their own numbers, the Western ones reprints in McDonald's sets. In the United Kingdom, the McDonald's cards handed out from March 17, 2026 are Iconic CARDS, McDonald's own collectible set, not Pokémon cards.

If the cards were spread evenly, completing a 15-card set took about 15 Happy Meals on average in 2022 and 2023, and about 18 in 2024, because each pack held only one of the holos. The campaigns and their cards are listed year by year in our catalog of McDonald's Pokémon cards.

Western McDonald's cards from 2011 to 2024: numbered out of 12, 25 or 15, with a McDonald's set symbol or the M23 and M24 codes. Until 2019, every English card was a Confetti holo.
Japanese McDonald's cards from 2002 to 2025: a promo number, or the Minimum Pack's number out of 018, and a McDonald's M logo on every one shown.

The 2021 prices do not separate the holo and non-holo prints, and no sale of a 2022 to 2024 card is recorded in the site's data yet. Japan's Happy Set promos of 2002 to 2014 sell for $3 to $88 raw (53 of them priced, half under $11). The 2002 Minimum Pack is the one worth a close look: every one of its Pokémon sells for $152 to $9,499 in a PSA 10.

Grading rarely pays for the Western cards or the 2025 Japanese ones. PSA's cheapest tier cost $59.99 a card on September 23, 2026, with its Value tier paused, which is more than almost every Western McDonald's card is worth raw; even the 2025 Pikachu only goes from $23.12 raw to $90.36 in a PSA 10.

Sealed packs are a gamble on random contents, and a sealed pack proves nothing on its own: resealed and counterfeit packs exist, so the cards inside still need checking.

Can you play them in tournaments?

A few can. McDonald's cards follow the ordinary rules: since April 10, 2026, the Standard format accepts the regulation marks H, I and J. Of the 45 cards of 2022 to 2024, two carry one of them, Roaring Moon 011/015 and Drampa 015/015 from Dragon Discovery, both H; the 2023 set is all G. An older card can still be played when a functionally identical printing with a legal mark exists.

FAQ

Are McDonald's Pokémon cards worth anything?

Most are worth a few dollars: as of September 24, 2026, the Western cards of 2011 to 2021 mostly sell for $2 to $12 raw. The valuable ones are the Pokémon of Japan's 2002 Minimum Pack ($20 to $1,566 raw) and the Europe-only 2016 set ($19 to $63).

Are McDonald's Pokémon cards the same as regular cards?

They are official cards and play by the same rules, but they carry McDonald's numbering and a McDonald's set symbol instead of the number and symbol of the card they reprint, and no rarity symbol.

Are there McDonald's Pokémon cards in 2026?

Not in Japan or the United States, as of September 24, 2026. Japan's Pokémon Happy Set of August 2026 came with toys and no cards, no US Happy Meal has carried Pokémon cards in 2026, and the last Western set, Dragon Discovery, ran from December 2024 to mid-2025.

Which McDonald's Pokémon card is the most valuable?

Among the McDonald's cards priced on this site, the 2002 Japanese Minimum Pack Squirtle 007/018 sells for the most raw: $1,566 (9 sales) as of September 24, 2026, and $9,499 in a PSA 10 (6 sales). Its Pikachu 010/018 follows at $850 raw.
