Rising Rivals

Series: Platinum

Release date: May 16, 2009

Cards: 111 (9 secret)

Set code: PL2

Two more classes of Pokémon SP arrive with this expansion, the GL cards belonging to Sinnoh's Gym Leaders and the 4 cards belonging to its Elite Four, both lifted from Pokémon Platinum. A six card run lettered RT sits outside the numbering, Rotom in its five appliance forms, each with a Poké-POWER that shifts it to another type for a turn, Heat to Fire and Mow to Grass. The sixth is a Supporter, Charon's Choice, which trades one Rotom for another and then goes back to your hand rather than to the discard pile, the only Supporter printed that way. Three secret cards follow the numbered list and every one is a Pikachu: the Base Set card redrawn by Mitsuhiro Arita, and the Flying and Surfing versions, which reuse Toshinao Aoki's paintings from the promos they came from. Nine Pokémon LV.X close the printed run, six of them SP cards. Cutting Edge and Drill Point were the theme decks, and Japan had the parent set, Bonds to the End of Time, close to five months earlier. Rising Rivals (PL2) was released on May 16, 2009 in the Platinum series, with 111 cards plus 9 secret rares. Its most expensive card is Snorlax LV.X #111 (Rare Holo LV.X), at $472.92 (median of 12 sales over 30 days, September 30, 2026).
