Obsidian Flames

Series: Scarlet & Violet

Release date: August 11, 2023

Cards: 197 (33 secret)

Set code: SV03

Tera Pokémon ex had kept their usual types until this expansion, which is the first to move them: Tyranitar arrives as a Lightning type, Eiscue as a Fire type and Vespiquen as a Psychic type, with weakness and resistance following the new type while the attack costs stay with the old one. The card the packs were opened for is the Charizard ex at 223, painted by AKIRA EGAWA as a single burst of colourless crystal with the wings left prismatic, and it is a Darkness type like the other three Charizard ex here. Special illustrations also went to Geeta and to Poppy, signed DOM and Ryota Murayama. The English list is an assembly job: it takes the Japanese Ruler of the Black Flame, adds the ex Start Decks and the ex Special Set, and sweeps up the cards from Triplet Beat, Snow Hazard and Clay Burst that Paldea Evolved had left behind. Its ultra rare block breaks the usual order, since Absol ex is numbered 214 and Charizard ex 215 although both are Darkness and Charizard has the lower Pokédex number, where the Japanese set prints them the other way round. Three gold etched cards close the numbering, and one of them is a Basic Fire Energy. Obsidian Flames (SV03) was released on August 11, 2023 in the Scarlet & Violet series, with 197 cards plus 33 secret rares. Its most expensive card is Charizard ex #223 (Special illustration rare), at $89.99 (median of 32 sales over 7 days, October 2, 2026). A sealed booster box sells for $363.62 (median of 11 sales over 7 days, September 25, 2026).
