Magikarp (Tamamushi University “Hyper Test” 1998)

About this card

The event was staged as a university entrance exam, and what passing it earned you was a Magikarp. Ken Sugimori draws the fish thrashing in a burst of white light inside a gold border, with thirty hit points and a first attack called Flop. Its second attack is Dragon Rage, and the text beside it explains why: recent research, the card claims, has detected dragon DNA in Magikarp's body. The joke lands twice, once on the useless fish and once on the Gyarados it is about to become.
